Dell's “World’s Thinnest” Adamo Notebook

Dell the company is officially launching the ultraportable in what seems to be one of the first notebooks in its Adamo by Dell brand.

As the chassis of the 13.4-inch laptop was milled from a single piece of aluminum and features fine detailing across the body. Sound a little Apple-like to you? The Apple comparisons don’t stop there. Measuring just .6 inches thin, Dell is touting the Adamo as “the world’s thinnest laptop”; the Macbook Air is .76 inches. However, the 4 pound Adamo weighs an extra pound more than the manila-envelope-fitting Air.

But there is no doubt that the Adamo will be one of the best looking laptops in history. Available in onyx and pearl, the Adamo is made of anodized aluminum and sports unique etching and finish. Toshiba announced today the availability of its latest 15.4-Inch notebook, the Dynabook Satellite PXW Series. Asus upcoming Laptop with Dual-Panel portable.

Made up two LCD-sized displays in a thin form factor, one can function as a conventional screen with the other used as a virtual keyboard using touch input. Alternatively, the device can be flipped in an A4 orientation and used as a e-book reader, or just used in conventional fashion as a touch screen computer in the style of today's Tablet PCs.

For users who care about video, Asus sees the two screens being combined to create a widescreen effect, rounding off the machine multiple identities without necessarily compromising the usability of any one of them.

"The dual panel offers a flexible working space in which users can adapt to suit their prevailing usage scenarios, for example adjusting the size of the virtual touchpad and keyboard," said the Asus press release. "Through hand gestures, handwriting recognition and multi-touch, users are presented with a control surface that is both flexible and intuitive."

The dual-screen concept has come from the Community Designed PC Project, the company said; some of whose design ideas take this multi-screen ability to extremes. Separately, Asus said it would phase out its groundbreaking 7-inch Eee PC machines this year, focusing instead on 10-inch models.

That, plus the extremely good looks isa killer, we say. We would like to have one delivered to us, right now, hear us, Sony?The Sony Vaio VGN UX50 MicroPC boasts a startup time of 5 seconds! That is real fast for anything running Windows XP. Thought I suspect that once you download and install a few programs of your owna nd the startup folder gets a little packed, we are going to see real slow startup times.
